Powerful Beginnings: Internships at Doble
Developing the next generation of talent is a key element of Doble’s continued success and innovation, as the significant demographic shift in the industry, and retirement of power engineers has led to a critical need for new talent. Following a reduction of intern requests during the COVID-19 pandemic, the internship program at all of Doble’s facilities, is back in full force this summer– opening significant opportunities for professional growth and impactful work.
A diverse group of interns representing various backgrounds and professional interests across the country will be participating in this year’s program, which kicked off with a career panel led by the Doble executive team on May 31st. The program will host interns at each Doble site, including our headquarters in Marlborough, oil laboratories in Texas, North Carolina, and Indiana, and production facility in Maryland.
This year, Doble welcomes more than 20 summer interns and three summer co-op students, preparing young professionals for careers in software and hardware engineering, sales and marketing, supply chain management, lab testing, mechanical design, and more. From hands-on technical work in labs on insulation materials to building out new elements of IT infrastructure and cybersecurity protocols, interns at Doble can make a demonstrated impact during their time with the company.
Hands-On Learning
Beyond gaining essential professional skills through networking and informational sessions on topics like career advice and presentation skills, interns at Doble gain the unique opportunity to make a true impact in their daily work. Our interns are involved in Doble’s day-to-day operations and testing processes, playing a key role in delivering the data and insights that Doble customers rely on.
Each intern also has the opportunity to interact with different departments through professional and social activities, both in person and virtually. With both in-person and virtual options, every intern, no matter where they are, can gain the experience and learning opportunities they’re looking for.
By taking intern preferences and goals under consideration, our program enables interns to tap into various areas of interest beyond their specific role, including the chance to shadow different departments. These elements set our interns up for success and represent Doble’s commitment to fostering lifelong learning for the talent of today and beyond.
Professional Development and Personal Growth
Facilitating professional development and community activities are central elements of Doble’s internship program and philosophy for developing talent. Throughout the summer, we provide Lunch and Learn sessions to help interns build skills in interviewing, resume building, public speaking, and presenting.
Outside of professional development, interns get the chance to bond, contribute to team projects, and have fun through activities like our famous cornhole tournament and community service volunteering.
Creating an inclusive interactive experience for all interns at all five sites is a vital goal of the program. By centering our program around engaging experiences beyond the daily work, interns will build connections with each other and within the company throughout the summer – leading to lasting friendships and mentor relationships.
Beyond the Summer
At the end of the summer session, our interns will be asked to present what they’ve learned to the leadership team, giving them the opportunity to celebrate the amount of learning, growth in confidence, and true impact Doble interns made throughout the summer. Our ultimate goal is for the value of the internship to last well beyond the three months and to contribute to the growth of the next generation of talent–no matter where they end up.
We encourage interns to stay in touch as they graduate and enter the workforce and have found that by establishing important mentor relationships and providing tangible, direct, hands-on experience, our interns are well-prepared to take on their careers and power a brighter future.
